The two fabrics we’ve recently added to our ranges are ideal for classic car upholstery, as they are hardwearing and fire-resistant.
Which Fabrics are Good For Classic Car Upholstery?
Leather is often a first choice for car seats. Baize, with it’s high wool content and natural breathability in warm weather and warmth in warm weather, make it great fabric for use in the variable temperature of car interiors.
Car seats are prone to heavy wear. Because of the way people get into and sit in cars, there is often a certain amount of twisting and movement in the seat. Effectively this is about two fabrics rubbing up against one another, with the addition of body weight. Therefore some interior design fabric characteristics are more favourable for uphostering car seats.
Key Features for Classic Car Upholstery Fabrics
Other than durability the main key feature of fabrics when used for covering car seats, is fire resistance. Thankfully all of our fabrics are inherently fire resistant, due to their high (90%+) wool content. Wool is naturally fire-resistant and smolders rather than burns and crucially doesn’t melt. Although the fabrics we’re recommending all contain a small percentage of nylon, because it is bound up with wool, the fire-resistant properties of the wool remain.
Properties of Fabric
Each fabric we stock has a set of criteria that are used to grade it:
Composition The fibre content of the fabric
Width The roll width of the fabric
Weight The grams per square metre (gsm) of the fabric
Abrasion Measured in “Rubs” this is tested using a mechanical process
Roll Length The length of the roll of fabric
Fire Resistance Match and Cigarette tested and approved by British Standards
