Covering backgammon boards with baize gives a luxurious and hard wearing playing surface that will provide years of play

Baize for Backgammon Boards

Using baize for covering new backgammon boards or to recover a restoration piece is a good choice. Baize is the orginal “gaming fabric”, which has been used for hundreds of years as a playing surface. From Snooker and Billiards, to playing card tables, dungeon and dragons gaming tables and backgammon boards, the smooth even texture of baize makes it well suited to all manner of games.

Why Use Baize Fabric?

The traditonal baize fabric that we sell, is made in Great Britain, using time honored methods. The high wool content of all of the baize fabrics that we have on sale, means that they are all very hardwearing. This is why baize is used time and again for snooker, billiard and pool tables. As well as in casino’s for playing card and roulette tables.

Another advantage of covering a backgammon board with baize, is that it makes the game slightly quieter, when rolling the dice. The softer surface muffles the sound well.

Which Fabric is Best for Backgammon Boards?

Many of the “traditional” baize fabrics we have on sale use Merino wool, which is both soft and supple. These fabrics will give you the most authentic finish and are much prized by furniture restorers. However, fabrics based on Merino wool will always cost more, because of time, labour, production and processing. Price is generally a good indication of the quality of a baize.

A cost efficient alternative to traditional baize, would be a fabric designed as a fabric for seating upholstery. This is made with 90% standard sheep’s wool and 10% nylon. It has a multidirectional twill weave so it has a slightly different finish to tradtional baize, but broadly the same qualities as a gaming surface.

Which Colour? Mix it Up!

Backgammon boards come in a variety of styles. From ornate, inlaid wooden boards such as the beautiful example below, to far simpler designs.

Backgammon boards with a covering, tend to use a green or tan baize, or suede with leather strips – or another contrasting material – to demark the points. This gives the backgammon board its striking appearance.

Offcuts of Baize – Ideal for Small Projects

With backgammon boards or tables being relatively small, the amount of cloth required means that some of our fabric offcuts could be a good fit. The offcuts are primarily from the range of heritage baizes, so are available in Green, Burgundy, Blue and Black. We also have remnants from the Extra Wide Range, which tend to offer a wider variety of colours.

Cut to Size – Just the Fabric You Need

If you have your heart set on a particular colour, for your backgammon board and can’t find an offcut or remnant big enough, we can cut a piece to size for you, down to the millimetre. This gives the widest gamut of colours and provides you with exactly what you need with no waste.
