Furoshiki – the Japanese art of fabric gift wrapping – is gaining popularity in the West as we all look to reduce and reuse as a way to lower our climate footprint.
From the Bath House
The Japanese art of Furoshiki – or fabric gift wrapping – started with the wrapping of precious temple objects during the Nara Period (710 to 794). By the Heian period (794 – 1185) this practice had evolved to wrapping clothes. Later still in Muromachi period (1336 – 1573) this wrapping of clothes became part of a ritualised visit to the bath house by members of Japanese high society. The word Furoshiki arising from Furo (bath) and Shiki (spread). In this context clothes were wrapped in ornately decorated cloths featuring the family’s seal.
Reusable Fabric Gift Wrap
As with many Japanese traditions, the gradual ritualistic use also went hand in hand with the elevation of aesthetic qualities. Eventually the practice of wrapping presents with fabric became common place. Using fabrics of varying thicknesses, materials and prices.
Typically Furoshiki cloths are 45cm x 45cm square up to 70 x 70 cm square. Furthermore, the cloths themselves can be ornately patterned or plain solid colours. As the wrapping itself adds its own beauty.
Use Our Offcuts
Our range of cloths aren’t ornately patterned, but they are beautiful. Especially our 100% Merino Wool fabrics, that have a wonderful sheen to them. Purchased off the roll or cut to size, would be an expensive but long lasting investment, fortunately we do sell generous off cuts, remnants and end of roll pieces of fabric. The larger offcuts and end of roll pieces would be ideal for the job and even better for the environment.
