Description
RAF Blue Heavyweight Melton Cloth
RAF Blue Heavyweight Melton cloth is a traditional cloth, made of wool and woven in a twill pattern. Its defining characteristics are its thickness and felt-like smooth surface. Unlike other twill weave cloth, the pattern is concealed, from the finishing processes used. Because of its dense, quasi-felted texture, it frays minimally or not at all. It is hard-wearing and wind and weather resistant. Made from pure merino wool, combined with these features, makes Melton cloth an ideal cloth for eco-conscious outerwear. Being particularly well suited to coats and jackets.
This heavyweight Melton cloth is 470gsm with a thickness of approximately 1.4mm. Traditionally worsted, this cloth closely resembles the types of cloth made and used during World War 2 for RAF uniforms. For re-enactment and historical uniform and clothing specialists, this cloth will give added authenticity to any garments or uniforms made from it. We stock a wide range of heritage grade fabrics, grouping them in a separate section called True Heritage.

About RAF Blue
RAF Blue, also known as Air Force blue (RAF), is a medium azure blue. It stems from the blue uniforms issued to the newly formed British Royal Air Force in 1920, who then influenced the design of the uniforms of other air forces around the world. The blue is still in use today in some RAF uniforms and the Royal Airforce Ensign.
Colour Variations of Woollen Fabrics
This 100% merino wool fabric is a natural material and colour variation is evidence of the natural origin of the material. Therefore the product colour is only indicative, as it is not possible to assure consistency of colour in a natural product due to the natural colour of raw wool and absorption of dyes. Colour matching cannot be guaranteed on shipments. The variation will be more pronounced beyond the normal commercial range.
